The powers of Creation, Brahma, the powers of preservation of the world (Murari) and the powers all within the world (Sura) all give homage to the pillar of cosmic light which is nirmal bhaas shining and resplendent shobhita lingam outwards as well as within itself. ![]() A similar pillar of “light” runs through our internal world, usually represented by the Kundalini. While it is the symbol of Lord Shiva, it also represents that pillar of light that is said to run throughout the cosmos, much like the milky way in deep space. The Linga in Hinduism represents both symbolic as well as philosophical thought. It is a dedication of faith and devotion towards God, symbolized by the linga. This particular ashtakam was composed by the great Adi Shankaracharya. ![]() These eight verses of the lingashtakam is one of many astakams (eight-verse-poetry) that were composed by the Rishis.
